Getty Villa [permalink]

For all the things I don’t particularly love about LA, being able to go to a place like the Getty Villa is definitely an exception. It’s been so busy for Jeannie and me lately that we haven’t gotten to spend that much time together - this was our first day out in awhile. And it was great. Except for the traffic.

Anyway, much silliness ensues in the following picture, so you can either bear with it or skip this blog post altogether. I actually feel like when doing silly pictures, I look back at them and feel blessed to have found such a compatible partner. (I know, I know. I’m such a sap…)

Also, I wanted to mention that my photography professor from Pomona College, Sheila Pinkel, is having a show at the American Jewish University which we went to see yesterday. If you’re into political art, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Wallace And Gromit [permalink]

I love Wallace’s desire to use inventions to do stuff he could easily do himself.

Random in Life and Love (and Blog) [permalink]

Holy cow, people. Things have been busy for me. Busy enough, in fact, that I’m not even going to put together a well organized and cohesive slideshow today. Instead, I’ve decided to just post pictures I’ve shot in the past two weeks… kind of a a snapshot of my life since my lifestyle shoot with the Bangash family. I’ve been second shooting a ton for my friends Jeff Lawler and Natalie Moser, and I’ve included some of the more experimental stuff I’ve been working on with lighting (as well as some details and a few PortaStudio shots). I also have two pictures of tomatoes and basil that Jeannie and I have been growing this summer… just because growing stuff kicks-ass.

Just some notes on the pictures:
- there is one picture where I think I used 7 mirrors for the shot.
- two long exposure night shots.
- there is a lot of flash used in these pictures, but…
- some shots aren’t lit, but i like them, so i’m posting them.
- trying new things is a lot of fun… but a lot of stress too.
- multiple flash exposures can give you some interesting cubist looking forms in the pictures.
- the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 D doesn’t really do well with backlight… rumors have it the f/1.4 G is coming out in September… and that a 1.2 is coming out next year.
- a big shout out to all the random catalogs I’ve been looking at to get ideas for lighting.

Kinetic So.Cal [permalink]

Some of you might know this already, but I used to do a little bit of design for a small start-up outdoorsy t-shirt company called Kinetic So.Cal. Anyway, things didn’t work out with the company and it closed, but I still have some shirts that I designed that I’m trying to get rid of. Let me know if you want one [email me: daniel (a) danielchinphotography (dot) com]! They’re free, except I do ask for $5 to cover shipping costs if you want it shipped.

The light colored ones are women’s shirts made from organic cotton. I only have them in Small and Medium.

The gray ones are men’s made from regular cotton. I only have Mediums for those.

The designs are printed on American Apparel t-shirts, so they are made in Los Angeles, sweat-shop free.

Lauren Hill [permalink]

It’s been awhile since I blogged, and I have this humongous blog coming up with pictures of all this stuff I’ve been working on the past 3 weeks or so… but until I get that together, I just want to share some clips of Lauren Hill. I really miss her music. I realize she feels like she has bigger and more important things to take care of in life, but it doesn’t make me miss her any less. There videos are live performances, since live is generally regarded the a more true display of talent.

I can’t find it on YouTube, but there’s an amazing version of her doing Killing Me Softly with the Fugees on Dave Chappelle’s Block Party.
