The Road (or Path) by G.O.D. [Korean Music] [permalink]

(G.O.D. is the name of the group, by the way.)

This song is from a period when Korean music and film were just starting to find an international audience almost 10 years ago. I like the song, but I love the cinemetography. Simple color palette, beautiful light and framing.

(Mini-movie intro. Music starts at 2:14)

Julie Bai [Preview] [permalink]

I usually don’t do sneak peeks or previews, but I will this one time because I don’t want to release all the pictures before Julie’s CD comes out in a month or 2… and because I just had to share at least one.

Going To See Pixies Tonight [permalink]

I’m going to go see Pixies tonight. I told Jeannie that I’d pay the price of admission just to hear them to “Hey” live. There’s really nothing like hearing a song that you love done live. Pixies is band that is its own alternate genre. Tumultuous dynamics for certain, but they make such great music. There’s not a good chance I’ll be able to sneak an SLR in there or get up close to the stage, so these videos from their 2004 show will have to do.

One of my favorite songs – perhaps of all time:

Debaser:

And here’s the song that put them the radar again after it was featured in Fight Club:

(Here’s the actual scene from Fight Club for reference:)

And of course, I’d be remiss to not mention that loudQUIETloud (a documentary about their first reunion tour) is available through Netflix Instant Watch.

Josh Damigo Record Release @ Lestat’s [permalink]

090516_0402

I met Josh about a year ago, just shooting some stuff at a little workshop called OneLight down in San Diego. From what I could gather from the sort time I got to chat with him was that all he wants to do is play music for a living.

Fast forward about a year, and I see a little notice pop up on my Facebook that Josh was releasing his CD at one of his regular places, Lestat’s (which, by the way, is such a great little place for coffee and live music). We’ve been talking about having me shoot one of his shows for about the entire past year, but we finally got it all together for the release of his CD “RAW”.

I forgot how much I love live music. When I took his picture last time, he wasn’t playing, so this was my first time seeing him play. I love watching people who just love what they do. Josh is one of those people.

There’s another artist you will see in some of these pictures, and her name is Anjulie. She’s definitely worth checking out as well.

More info on Josh Damigo here: www.myspace.com/joshdamigo
More info on Anjulie: www.myspace.com/anjulie

You can find their music on iTunes, and I think Anjulie has her CD out in certain Starbucks in San Diego.

Meet the Talented Mr. Young [permalink]

I’ve been wanting to post this for awhile. Meet my really good friend Andrew Young. Andrew is an amazing musician, among other talents, and I love sharing his music with other people. This song was really special though. He actually kept it under wraps and nobody got to hear him play it until his bride, Emily, was walking down the aisle on their wedding day.

I hope you enjoy this video, which was made when he replayed the song after the wedding for friends to hear again.

Lauren Hill [permalink]

It’s been awhile since I blogged, and I have this humongous blog coming up with pictures of all this stuff I’ve been working on the past 3 weeks or so… but until I get that together, I just want to share some clips of Lauren Hill. I really miss her music. I realize she feels like she has bigger and more important things to take care of in life, but it doesn’t make me miss her any less. There videos are live performances, since live is generally regarded the a more true display of talent.

I can’t find it on YouTube, but there’s an amazing version of her doing Killing Me Softly with the Fugees on Dave Chappelle’s Block Party.

Ibadi – “Neverending Story” [permalink]

The American conceit has taught me that everything worth learning was discovered or invented in America by Western Civilization (white folks mainly, be them European or American). I am slowly unlearning that. I somehow always forget that many European avant-garde artists over the centuries drew heavily on the influence of Asian art. It’s very strange to me that so few, if any, of those influences ever get their own space in the art history books.

I am not Korean, and I don’t understand more than maybe two phrases in the entire song, but it’s a beautiful visual concept paired with a pretty song.

Walk Away [permalink]

Say what you will about Kelly Clarkson, I really like this video. I’m not sure I would like the song if not for the video, which makes it even more compelling to me to share. I don’t know that a concept like this has been done before in a music video, and even if it has, this is the first time I’ve seen something like it. Plus, I like her hair in the video (her clothes, not so much).

This video actually got me thinking about a plethora of concepts and ideas about creativity, art and entertainment. I have far more questions than answers, and they start out with something like this: Is music still an art just because it’s music? What is the line between art and entertainment? This video concept is clever and creative… but is it art? You can be creative without being an artist, but can you be an artist without being creative?

Any thoughts about this?
